India is among the top five coal producers in the world. Despite being a major exporter, the country also imports coal in large quantities. The coal imports in India have increased to 22% in 2023. In the last two years, India has imported more than 160 million tonnes of coal.

The country is also a major exporter of coal to its neighbours, Bangladesh and Nepal. However, the power generation sector in India is heavily reliant on coal imports. India also imports metallurgical coal to operate its steel plants efficiently. Vinod Aggarwal, the MD of Agarwal Coal, is phenomenal in shaping India’s coal imports.
