During the early months of the year, there are chances of snow on the high passes, which considerably melts by August. During the monsoon season, Kangra and Dhauladhar ranges remain affected due to rain, but when it comes to the high places, the weather remains usually warm and sunny (12-20 °C) during the day, while the night temperature could range to minus (-2 to 6 °C). During September and October, trekkers can experience good weather, with little snowfall. The day temperature is hovering around 12-18 °C by the onset of October but the evening starts getting comparatively colder at (- 6) to 4 °C.

Kareri lake trek begins near Dharamshala and traverses along with coniferous forests of Chilgoza and Chris pines. This is also an amazing spot for bird watching and the trekkers could thus spot some native Himalayan avian species like the Blue Magpie. The forests eventually give way to rocky grasslands, a beautiful passage of vegetation zones. This is a glacial lake by origin and thus lies in the snowline. Because of its approachability and beauty, this is a nice kickstart for beginners.
