Paul Ince has been dismissed after an eight-game winless streak that saw them slip into relegation contention. Noel Hunt, a former Republic of Ireland international, has been appointed interim manager until the end of the season.

Ince had a notable career at Reading, managing 58 games after taking over as interim manager when Veljko Paunovic was dismissed last February. Ultimately, Ince was appointed permanent manager in May.

Noel Hunt appointed as interim manager

Reading have fired manager Paul Ince after an eight-game winless streak and as the club fell into relegation danger. Former England, Manchester United and Liverpool midfielder Ince was appointed on an interim basis last February but made his position permanent in May.

On Easter Monday, Reading suffered a 2-1 loss to Preston North End that left them 22nd place and one point from safety with five games left to play. They were then docked six points by the EFL for breaching agreed financial rules, further dropping them further down the table.

Hunt, who served as U21 coach this season, will assume control of the first team until its season concludes. He will be assisted by former Chelsea goalkeeper Eddie Niedzwiecki and first-team coach James Oliver-Pearce.

On Saturday, Hunt will lead the Royals in their first match under his management when they host promoted Burnley at Select Car Leasing Stadium. Following that, they face Luton (on course for a playoff spot), Coventry and Wigan over four games with relegation still an option.

Reading’s relegation battle

Reading have fired Paul Ince after their eight-game losing streak that saw them slip into Championship relegation territory. A statement on the Royals' website confirmed that both 55-year-old manager and assistant Alex Rae had been dismissed.

In February 2022, former Manchester United and Liverpool midfielder Ince joined the club on an interim basis, helping them avoid relegation last season with four wins from their final 14 matches. Despite a transfer embargo affecting the club, Ince's arrival enabled them to assemble a squad on reduced wage budget.

However, a six-point deduction for breaching EFL financial regulations has left the Royals in danger of being relegated. A draw at Birmingham City followed by losses to Blackpool and Huddersfield Town have left them 19th place, one point ahead of QPR and Wigan Athletic in their battle for survival.

Ince’s sacking

Reading have finally decided to part ways with manager Paul Ince after an eight-game winless streak which had left them in the bottom three of the Sky Bet Championship. They made their announcement on Tuesday morning, one day after suffering a 2-1 loss against Preston North End.

In February of last year, the former Manchester United and England international joined the Royals on an interim basis before taking over permanently in May. His efforts helped the Royals avoid relegation with four wins from 14 games while working under a strict transfer embargo and reduced wage budget.

Last week, however, he was deducted six points for violating financial regulations and it became evident that his reign at Madejski Stadium had come to an end. With the Royals lying in 22nd place and in danger of relegation, it became imperative for the board to act now and take action.

Reading’s future

Paul Ince has been dismissed by Reading after eight games without a victory. He has been replaced by former striker Noel Hunt, who will serve as interim manager until the end of the season.

The Royals have won just two of their last 16 Championship matches and are in the relegation zone. Last week they were deducted six points for breaking EFL financial rules.

Five games remain for the Royals to stay in the division, but it could still be too little too late. Manager Mark Bowen says they are searching for a new manager who can guide them towards a healthier and brighter future.

Ince guided Reading to safety at the back end of last season, but results and performances have suffered in recent months with just two wins in 17 league games. On Easter Monday's loss at Preston further compounded their woes as it extended their winless streak to eight matches and proved the final straw.
