Many new Airsoft players can become overwhelmed by all the terms and jargon associated with purchasing their first gun, with FPS (Feet Per Second) often becoming one of the main terms used. While increasing FPS can improve accuracy and overall performance, increasing it to unsafe levels may cause injury to other players or unfair advantages; since airsoft games tend to focus more on competition rather than harm, any increase in velocity which could cause injury is prohibited from reaching unsafe levels.

To ensure players do not exceed these limits, most Airsoft fields utilize a chronograph device to test FPS before players begin playing. A chronograph measures how long it takes a BB to travel from point A to point B; Marshalls can then use this information to ascertain whether a gun can safely be used at that game site.

Maximum FPS limits vary between airsoft sites, but typically range between 350 fps indoors and 380-400 fps outdoor playback. Some sites may set higher FPS limits for specific types of guns (e.g. sniper rifles), for safety purposes; this would prevent high muzzle velocity guns from easily hitting players close up at close range.

Many variables can impact the FPS of an airsoft gun, such as its internal motor and hop up system as well as the type of BB being used. Lighter BBs often produce lower FPS than their heavier counterparts because they require less force to travel the same distance; heavier ones, on the other hand, have less kinetic energy once leaving their barrel and therefore may be affected more strongly by external variables like wind.

Gas sources such as co2 or propane can have an enormous effect on an airsoft gun's FPS rate. While using any liquid propellant can increase power output, using any type of liquid propellant could cause rubber parts inside its barrel to melt resulting in serious damage or destruction of your rifle.

Though this information can assist with estimating an airsoft gun's maximum FPS, it should not be seen as definitive as other factors may come into play. Therefore, it is advised that you visit a dedicated airsoft shop and discuss your preferred rifle with an experienced member of staff to find one suitable to your needs without exceeding safety or legal limits - that way you can enjoy playing airsoft with confidence knowing you have safe yet effective weapon in your arsenal.
