Suzanne Collins's book The Hunger Games is a dystopian adventure tale about Panem. Panem is broken into 12 districts with varying wealth levels. The Capitol is wealthier than the rest and has greater power. The Hunger Games tells the story of Katniss Everdeen, a girl from District 12. Katniss lost her father when she was young, so she had to feed Primrose, her younger sister, and her mom. She has developed a skill as an archer over the years she has been feeding her family. The Capitol makes every attempt to force all districts to take part in the Hunger Games each year. 24 young adults (12 male and 12 female) are placed in an arena where they fight to the death. The story is set during the 74th Hunger Games. From District 12, the names that were drawn were Primrose Evedeen and Peeta Molark. Katniss Everdeen, in a brave effort to save her sister, volunteered to take her place. Peeta and Katniss then travel to the Capitol to begin their training with Haymitch, their mentor. Peeta confesses to the crowd in their first interviews that he has a crush upon Katniss. Katniss believes that Peeta and Katniss are "Star-crossed lovebirds". This is an act Haymitch has set up to attract sponsors and entertain the crowd. However, throughout the story we discover that Peeta is real and Katniss is genuine. Each tribute is scored at the end of their training. Peeta got an 8/12, which is quite good considering that he comes from the poorest area. Katniss got an absurd 11/12. Unfortunately, the star-crossed lovers are split up as soon as the games start. Katniss sets out to find water, and Peeta joins forces with tributes from lower areas. Peeta's allies chase Katniss into a tree, and they decide to wait for her. With a little help from District 11 tribute Rue Katniss drops a Tracker Jacker nest onto the alliance while she is still in the tree. The tributes all escape with very few stings and only one girl is killed. Rue, the youngest tribute, and Katniss form their own alliance. They go on to destroy the supplies of the alliance and Rue is also killed. Katniss shows compassion by decorating Rue's body in flowers that the Capitol doesn't like. Katniss sets out to find Peeta. Unfortunately, when she does locate him, he's camouflaged in the rock and has severely injured his leg. Katniss helps Peeta, and they stay in a cave until Peeta can heal. Katniss discovers that the more Katniss plays up the love between them, the more sponsors she will get. Katniss begins to kiss Peeta, and they have meaningful conversations in order to get the sponsors' supplies. Peeta believes Katniss is in love with her. The Capitol provides a bag that contains everything the person requires at the cornucopia. Peeta does not want Katniss going, but she tricks her into giving him a sleeping medication so that she can get the bag. Peeta is saved when she returns safely to her and opens the bag. After much more scavenging and eating, the games are over. To bring everyone together, the Gamemakers unleash muttations. These are large wolf-like animals. Katniss kills one more Cornucopia animal, and she and Peeta believe they have won. But, a loudspeaker announces that the rule revision was canceled and that there will be only one winner. Katniss, Peeta discover that they won't be able survive on their own after spending so many weeks together. Both decide to eat poisonous fruits together so the Capitol can force them to win. If they don't, there will be no winner. They think they can win because the Capitol allows them to both win. However, Haymitch informs them that the Capitol doesn't like them for outsmarting it.
